The inEvent workshop (Audiovisual Communications to Empower your Organization) report is out
Summary of our discussions. Efficient communication doesn't come naturally! We recognize the problems of communicating across differences of time, culture, geography, and organizational boundaries – but one of the biggest divides are between the young and the old in the same workforce. The young are much more accepting of new technologies. Sometimes these can really solve communication problems, but the benefits have to be balanced against the disruption of having too many products to learn and too many places to check for information.

Idiap submission to MediaEval 2013 ranked first for the video hyperlinking tas
The Idiap NLP group has participated in the search and hyperlinking task at the MediaEval 2013 evaluation campaign. The NLP group was ranked first out of eleven participants on the hyperlinking task (finding video segments related to a given one) and third out of seven on the keyword video search task.
Using 1260 hours of broadcast TV material provided by BBC, the search sub-task required finding a segment based on a text query, while the hyperlinking sub-task required finding items from the collection that are related to “anchors” from known items. The NLP group proposed a unified approach to both sub-tasks, grounded in methods from content-based recommendation. The idea is to compute the most similar segments to a given text query or to another segment, based on words, then to re-rank them using visual concepts.
The NLP group was ranked first on the hyperlinking task for mean average precision, with values above 50%. This task is also the closest one to its research themes. Additional analyses and comparisons of scores are under way and will be presented in future publications, including a special session at ICMR 2014.
The team from Idiap’s Natural Language Processing group acknowledges the kind support of the SNSF/IM2 Aroles project as well as of the EU inEvent project.

inEvent team led by Idiap wins ACM Multimedia Grand Challenge on video lecture annotation and search
The MUST-VIS system proposed by a team led by Idiap and including members of the inEvent consortium, with additional support from the IM2 Aroles project, has been declared the winner of the MediaMixer/VideoLectures.NET Grand Challenge.
The organizers have selected the MUST-VIS system for its “appealing visualization of video-to-video and segment-to-segment linking based on video analysis and tagging, and their associations”. The prize includes an invitation for two scientists to visit the MediaMixer/VideoLectures.NET main team at the Jožef Stefan Institute in Ljubljana, Slovenia. This challenge was one of the five composing the ACM Multimedia 2013 Grand Challenge plenary session, where the MUST-VIS has been presented and demonstrated. The inEvent team included members from Idiap’s Natural Language Processing group, Klewel SA, Fraunhofer’s Heinrich-Hertz Institute, and the University of Edinburgh.

InEvent – Accessing Dynamic Networked Multimedia Events
Started in November 2011, Idiap leads a 3-year European-funded research project named inEvent.
The main goal of inEvent is to develop new tools for working with recorded meetings, videoconferences, and lectures.
The project involves 6 partners: 3 industrial ones and 3 non-profit research institutes.
In the first phase of this project, we are currently investigating user scenarios, user requirements and anticipating new ways of interacting with recorded meetings, video-conferences and lectures.
We are looking for two organizations that:
- meet at least once a year,
- cannot always get together but need to communicate,
- would not mind having their meetings recorded and accessed by our automatic research tools.
For the right groups, this is a unique opportunity to communicate better, both in meetings and to the wider public.
To find out if your organization could benefit from working with us, have a look at this document, and do not hesitate to contact Klewel.
